Pamukkale Map: Where It Is & How to Find It

Pamukkale sits in Denizli province in southwest Turkey, inland from the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts. On a map it’s roughly equidistant from Izmir and Antalya (about 3 to 4 hours from each by road) and a long way south of Istanbul. The white terraces and the ancient city of Hierapolis occupy one hillside above the small Pamukkale village.

The map

The interactive map below shows the site, the three entrance gates, Pamukkale village, and the nearby town of Karahayıt. Use it to plan which gate to head for and where to stay.

How the site is laid out

Picture a long white slope facing the valley, with the ruins of Hierapolis spread across the top. There are three ways in:

  • The South Gate is up top, near the ruins and the biggest car park, with the shortest walk to the terraces.
  • The Town Gate is at the bottom, in Pamukkale village, at the foot of the white slope.
  • The North Gate is the far entrance, dropping you into Hierapolis and the necropolis first.

Which you choose shapes your visit; the full comparison is on the tickets and gates page.

Getting there and what’s nearby

Almost every route to Pamukkale runs through Denizli, 18 km away, then a short minibus to the village. See the getting there hub for routes from each city. Close by are the ruins of Laodicea, the red springs of Karahayıt, and, a little further, Salda Lake and Kaklık Cave; the day trips hub maps those out.

Frequently asked questions

Where is Pamukkale?

Pamukkale is in Denizli province in southwest Turkey, inland from the Aegean coast, about 18 km from the city of Denizli. The site sits on a hillside above Pamukkale village; the white travertine terraces and the ruins of Hierapolis share the same hilltop. The nearest airport is Denizli Çardak (DNZ), about an hour away.

How big is the Pamukkale site?

The white travertine slope runs about 2.7 km long and 160 metres tall, and the ruined city of Hierapolis covers the plateau above it. It is compact enough to see entirely on foot, no transport needed inside: the terraces take one to two hours, and adding Hierapolis makes it a half to a full day.

Is Pamukkale near Cappadocia?

No, they sit on opposite sides of the country. Pamukkale is in the southwest, in Denizli province near the Aegean, while Cappadocia is in central Anatolia about 600 km east, a nine-to-ten-hour drive or a connecting flight. Travellers often pair them on a trip, but they are not close together.

How do you find Pamukkale on Google Maps?

Search 'Pamukkale' or 'Pamukkale Thermal Pools' and it lands you at the terraces; 'Hierapolis' brings up the ruins on the same hill. For directions, set the destination to Pamukkale village or a specific gate, since the site has more than one entrance and they are not close to each other.
